Linux kernel versions since 2011 across all mainstream distributions (Ubuntu, RHEL, Debian, SUSE, etc.). Any system running an unpatched kernel containing CVE-2026-43499 is vulnerable. Requires local authenticated access to exploit.
Exploitation Status
Publicly disclosed by Nebula Security. Exploitation requires only local user access with no special permissions. Given the age and simplicity described, proof-of-concept code is likely available or will emerge rapidly. No indication of prior active exploitation mentioned, but 15-year presence increases risk of prior undisclosed use.
Business Impact
Any user with login access (including low-privilege service accounts, compromised user credentials, or insider threats) can escalate to root privileges. This bypasses all privilege separation controls and enables full system compromise: data exfiltration, persistence mechanisms, lateral movement, and destruction of audit logs. Particularly critical for multi-tenant systems, shared hosting, jump servers, and environments with third-party vendor access. Patch availability from vendors is expected imminently given the critical severity.

- Restrict local user access on critical systems: disable unnecessary user accounts, enforce jump host access, and review SSH key authorizations
- Deploy kernel runtime protection where patching is delayed: consider live patching services (Ubuntu Livepatch, Red Hat kpatch, SUSE kGraft) if immediate reboot is not feasible
- Monitor for exploitation indicators: unusual process ancestry chains, unexpected setuid calls, and new SUID binaries using auditd rules or EDR telemetry
