Affected Systems

Cisco Secure Email Gateway (SEG) appliances running vulnerable versions of AsyncOS Software. CVE-2026-76461 affects all physical and virtual appliances regardless of configuration. Over 400 internet-exposed instances tracked by Shadowserver.

Exploitation Status

Active exploitation confirmed by Cisco PSIRT in September 2026. CISA added CVE-2026-76461 to KEV catalog on September 15, 2026. No public PoC details disclosed, but threat actors are actively exploiting in the wild.

Business Impact

Unauthenticated remote attackers can execute arbitrary commands with root privileges by sending a specially crafted email containing malicious SQL statements. Full system compromise is possible. Attackers may delete exploitation evidence from logs. Federal agencies under CISA order to patch within 3 days (by September 17). This is the second actively exploited AsyncOS zero-day in 2026, following CVE-2025-20393 exploited since November 2025.

Recommended Actions

  • Apply Cisco security patches for CVE-2026-76461 immediately to all Secure Email Gateway appliances running AsyncOS Software
  • Review mail_logs on each cluster device for suspicious SQL statements as indicators of compromise
  • Cross-reference network and firewall logs for unusual uploads/downloads to external or malicious IP addresses, especially if mail_logs appear clean
  • Isolate or restrict internet exposure of SEG appliances until patching is complete if operationally feasible
  • Monitor Cisco advisory for updated IOCs and forensic guidance; assume attackers may have removed log evidence
